Helping Damaged Health Clinics Reopen in Flood-Damaged Northwest Pakistan
September 16, 2022
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Province in northwest Pakistan is a region of stark mountains and fertile valleys. It is also one of the areas the recent monsoon flooding has most severely impacted, affecting more than 4.3 million people in the province.
The region has experienced extensive damage to homes, water and sanitary facilities, and food supplies. This is increasing the burden of illness, with thousands reporting skin infections, diarrhea and lung infections. Others have lost their livelihood with more than 35,000 acres of crops and 20,000 heads of livestock lost.
To help support the community in this vulnerable region, the GE Foundation is making a US$100,000 donation to provide immediate relief. The funds will go to Americares, a healthcare-focused disaster relief organization that is working to restore operations at more than 20 health facilities in the province.
“Restoring the health infrastructure’s functionality in the province is critical in the battle against the disastrous floods the region has witnessed,” said Masroor Mahmud, President of GE Pakistan. “Americares is on the ground in Pakistan helping to rehabilitate these medical facilities, which continue to provide a lifeline to those displaced, and GE is proud to stand with them.”
In addition to the GE Foundation donation, GE employees from around the world will support relief efforts through the foundation’s one-to-one Matching Gifts Program.
Globally, GE’s Disaster and Humanitarian Relief program responds to major global disasters and humanitarian crises, drawing on GE’s people, technology and other resources to reduce suffering and hasten recovery. Since 2020, GE Foundation’s philanthropic contribution in disaster relief totaled nearly US$7.2 million, which was largely focused on the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. GE remains committed to preparing for and responding to future natural disasters and humanitarian crises, diligently maximizing the impact of our financial, technological, and human resources.
