Virtual City’ Exhibit Shows Qatari Kids What Energy Efficiency Looks Like

Some of the most popular entertainment centers for children are those that create entire worlds where kids can pretend to play adult roles, such as pilots, chefs, police or doctors. That’s what’s so brilliant about a ‘virtual city’ sponsored by GE at the recently opened Kahramaa Awareness Park in Doha.

The entire Park is dedicated to raising awareness and educating children and families about the properties of electricity and water, how they are produced, and the importance of conserving these precious resources.

Within the Park, GE has established a permanent display that creates a virtual city where visitors can walk through to see real examples of energy efficiency and energy savings technologies and solutions. The exhibit covers the entire electricity value chain, including electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption.

Technologies from GE Grid Solutions; GE Power; GE Water; Current, powered by GE; and GE Renewable Energy are on display in the exhibit.

The Park was developed by Kahramaa, the national water and power transmission and distribution company in Qatar, under its Tarsheed Initiative. Tarsheed, the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency, seeks to reduce Qatar’s per capita water and electricity consumption by 35% and 20%, respectively. The country has already reduced electricity consumption by 18% and water by 20% during the initiative’s first phase.

GE Power attended Kahramaa’s recent ceremony marking the launch and inauguration of the Park, an event attended by H.E. Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister and Interior Minister; H.E. Dr. Mohamed bin Saleh Al Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry; Eng. Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, Kahramaa President; and other government and industry officials.
