Massive flooding in Pakistan in September affected more than 2.5 million people. Hundreds lost their lives, 2.4 million acres of crops were affected, livestock was washed away and homes were ruined across large areas of northeastern Pakistan.

In support of their fellow citizens, the GE Volunteers Pakistan Chapter organized a food collection and distribution program to help displaced people living in temporary Army Flood Relief Camps across the province of Punjab.

Together, the GE Pakistan employees collected 651,820 Pakistani Rupees during a month-long campaign that ended October 16. The money raised was used to purchase more than 3,500 kilograms of essential food items, including sugar, flour, oil, salt and other goods.

More than 25 staff and family members then gathered at the GE office in Lahore to help package the items into 388 cartons, which were then delivered to families in the camps. Together, GE employees and family members put in more than 185 hours of community service.

“The flood was a terrible tragedy and turned the lives of hundreds of thousands of people upside down. We are delighted to be able to help them in even this small way. Responsible citizenship is a key commitment at GE. The active participation in this event shows just how alive that spirit of giving and citizenship is here at GE Pakistan,” said Abdul Amar, head of the GE Volunteers Pakistan Chapter.

Earlier this year, GE Pakistan donated much-needed student desks to the Deer Da Dogra Government Primary School for Boys in the Sheikhupura District, which is home to a power plant operated and maintained by GE.

GE Volunteers are active across the region and the world, as part of a global initiative of GE that works with local organizations to address social needs by inviting GE employees to contribute in ways that help build stronger communities. Globally, GE’s employees volunteer more than 1.3 million hours of community service every year.
