In the Field: A Passion for Challenging Repair Jobs

Ghanshyam Shekhada loves solving challenging problems. That’s why he’s passionate about his role as a Senior Field Service Engineer for GE Healthcare in Saudi Arabia.

Originally from India, Ghanshyam, 44, has installed, repaired and maintained GE Healthcare magnetic resonance (MR) scanners for 10 years, including five years in India and five in the Kingdom.

The favorite part of his job is diagnosing and repairing equipment with a difficult or unfamiliar set of symptoms. “I enjoy finding out the root cause and solving this kind of difficult problem.”

This work is made more challenging because “from the customer end, they need their systems up and running as fast as possible, and will always ask: ‘When will it be working?”

Normally, these hospitals and clinics have full schedules of patients for their machines, so when a piece of equipment is down, whether for maintenance or repair, it affects patients and their care.

“That’s why when we resolve an issue in a short period, the customer is so happy and tells us, ‘You did a great job’!”

Last month Ghanshyam solved what might have been his most challenging repair yet. The customer’s MR scanner would work fine sometimes, but other times, it would show a range of problems, such as stopping during a scan, flickering displays, problems with the stock tray, or having power flowing to some coils but not others.

After replacing several parts that should have solved the problem but didn’t, Ghanshyam and his colleagues put their heads together. Drawing on their collective experience they decided to replace the sequences and control processing board (SRF/TRF). That solved the problem and the machine has worked perfectly ever since.

What made the successful repair so exciting for Ghanshyam is that the machine’s error log reported that all control boards were working fine, including the one they replaced. It was the collective problem solving of the field engineers, combined with their years of experience that helped them get the scanner back up and running, he says.

How did the customer react? “The customer was so happy. They kept saying ‘Wow, what an incredible diagnosis!”

Ghanshyam is one of nine field service engineers from the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and Pakistan region to be selected to participate in GE Healthcare’s Global Field Engineer Olympic Academy. They are among nearly 80 field service engineers from around the world selected to participate in a weeklong learning and development event during May at the GE Healthcare Institute in Waukesha, Wisconsin (USA).
