The last time you planned your vacation travel, you probably found yourself at the computer juggling dozens of browser windows open to countless destination, hotel, flight booking and social media websites. The team behind aviation travel app TripKing feels your pain and is now one step closer to drastically simplifying your travel planning.

The group of four Emiratis was the winner of Episode 2 of the filmed startup pitch competition called Cabin Pressure. They have won AED 50,000 in funding and incubator support as part of the Intelak Aviation & Travel Incubator.

The TripKing team competed against three other groups in Episode 2. You can watch the new episode of Cabin Pressure, including the four pitches and the judges’ reactions by clicking here.

A second startup, called Flyby Duty Free, was named runner-up and will get incubator support in developing its concept as part of Intelak (‘intelak’ means ‘taking off’ in Arabic). Flyby Duty Free is a travel app that lets you preorder duty free goods from any internet device and then pick up your purchase at your airport duty free.

The other two competitors in Episode 2 were Mezany, an app that curates customized experiences such as outdoor adventures and events, and AutoRobo, a concept for an autonomous luggage trolley at airports that would manage the movement of your bags throughout the airport check-in process

Launched by the Emirates Group, GE and Etisalat Digital in September, the Intelak incubator gives innovators, entrepreneurs and students from across the UAE the opportunity to develop their travel and aviation-related concepts. The judging panel for Cabin Pressure includes Neetan Chopra of the Emirates Group, Rania Rostom of GE, and Francisco Salcedo of Etisalat Digital. Further episodes will air in the coming weeks.

Before their filmed pitch presentations, the four teams underwent a demanding week-long bootcamp with coaching and mentoring that addressed four themes: design thinking, marketing, finance and pitching skills.

After listening to the four pitches and discussing their merits, Rania Rostom, GE’s Chief Innovation & Communications Officer for the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, was encouraged that the program had “unearthed all these amazing entrepreneurs and startups. I loved their creativity. They all demonstrated so much potential, so much talent. In the end, it was tough to make a final decision.”

“I gained so much experience from this, and now I’m going to get more coaching. How could it get even better than this?” said one of the TripKing team members during the Cabin Pressure episode.

Over four months, Intelak is providing coaching and mentoring to TripKing, Flyby Duty Free and the winners and runners-up from three other episodes of Cabin Pressure. Winners, such as TripKing, will receive their AED 50,000 prize as key milestones are met in the journey to further develop their ideas to enhance the passenger experience using innovative aviation travel apps.

They will then have the opportunity to pitch their proposals to angel investors and venture capital firms. Teams also will have potential co-creation and job opportunities with the Emirates Group, GE and Etisalat Digital.
