Rugged, Reliable, Flexible, and on Their Way to the Halfaya Oilfield in Iraq

Iraq is looking to double oil production at its Halfaya oilfield to 400,000 barrels a day, a move that requires more power onsite to drive production equipment. In support of this, Baker Hughes, a GE company (BHGE), will provide the field operator with rugged and reliable gas turbine generators capable of producing 150 megawatts of electricity.

The Frame 6B gas turbine generators will support PetroChina International Iraq’s operations with reliability and flexibility. The gas turbines function well in extreme conditions and harsh environments, such as those found at this southern Iraq field.

The gas turbines also are able to run on a wide range of gas or distillate liquid fuels, including sour gas, giving PetroChina International Iraq the potential to achieve cost savings by running the turbines on the most economical fuel available.

These same gas turbines have been used in projects across the region, including in the UAE and Oman.

The BHGE solution also includes electric generators.

This agreement further strengthens BHGE’s presence in the country, where it has contributed to a number of projects, including power generation support for two of Iraq’s largest fields – West Qurna and Rumalia. The company retains a local footprint consisting of over 70% Iraqi employees.

BHGE also owns and operates a technical services facility in the North Rumalia region, which opened in 2013 and underwent expansion this summer. The facility offers a wide range of testing, repair and refurbishment services and has helped to create local employment opportunities and training for more than 2,000 Iraqi professionals.
