Pulling 50 MW of Electricity from A Pakistan Wind Corridor

Pulling 50 MW of Electricity from A Pakistan Wind Corridor
November 05, 2014 at 03:11pm

The wind energy potential in Pakistan is huge. This country, which has an urgent need to increase electricity production and also manage the cost of fuel imports, has a total potential wind power capacity of 132,000 megawatts (MW). By comparison, the country’s total power demand was 18,400 MW in April 2014.

The country has just begun to tap this potential, with total installed capacity of just 106 MW.  However, that wind generation capacity will grow by nearly 50% once the 50 MW Sapphire Wind Power Farm is commissioned.

As has just been announced, the farm will be powered by 33 GE 1.5-82.5 wind turbines. GE’s 1.5-MW turbine, which delivers proven performance and reliability, is one of the most widely used wind turbines in its class, with more than 15,500 units in operation worldwide. GE will provide 10 years of operations and maintenance at the facility, which is located outside the southeastern city of Karachi.

Located in the Gharo-Keti Bandar Wind Corridor, which alone has a wind energy generating capacity of 50,000 MW of electricity, the wind farm is owned by the Sapphire Group and is being built by HydroChina.

Ultimately, Pakistan seeks to install 9,700 MW of wind power by 2030, sufficient to provide 5% of the country’s total electricity demand.

Although this is GE’s first wind project in Pakistan, it is a continuation of an 18-year relationship between GE and the Sapphire Group. This includes GE providing its Jenbacher engines and gas turbines for various power projects in Pakistan, including the 225 MW Muridke Power Station.
