At last week’s Farnborough International Airshow, Qatar Airways finalized orders and made purchase rights commitments that could total up to $8 billion in GE Aviation engine orders.

The confirmation of the GE9X-powered Boeing 777-9X aircraft order for 50 aircraft and a commitment for another 50 aircraft is the airline’s largest-ever order for a single aircraft type. The airline also ordered four GE90-powered Boeing 777 Freighters, with an option for an additional four 777 Freighters.

The GE9X engine – which will be the largest, most fuel-efficient large-body aircraft engine – will power the Boeing 777X, which Qatar Airways called the “backbone” of its fleet.

The GE9X engine will be in the 100,000-pound thrust class with a 10% improvement in fuel burn over today’s GE90-115B. For its part, the GE90-115B, which will power Qatar Airways’ Boeing 777 Freighters, has been enhanced since its 2000 launch specifications to reduce fuel burn by 3.6% and is well below international standards on key emissions.

The GE90 is one of GE’s most popular engines, while the GE9X is one of GE’s fastest-selling wide-body engines. Both engines are part of GE’s ecomagination portfolio of products that help clients address today’s environmental challenges.
