Powering Pakistan: Squeezing the Most Electricity from its Water Resources

In Pakistan, where peak power demand exceeds supply by more than 5,000 MW, being able to maximize the electricity going to the grid is a national priority.

That’s why the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) recently signed an agreement with GE to install Mark VIe control systems on two turbines at Mangla Dam, that required control and monitoring upgrades. The equipment will provide WAPDA with quality and reliable information at the controller and plant level. This will enable effective turbine management, thereby reducing downtime and ensuring greater productivity and efficiency.

The Mark VIe system is expected to be delivered to the Mangla Power Station in the first quarter of next year. Mangla Dam is one of the ten largest dams in the world by structural volume and its hydroelectric power plant  generates 1,000 MW of power. The country’s water resources generate approximately 30% of Pakistan’s supply of electricity and improving the efficiency and capacity of hydel projects is critical to helping meet the power deficit.
