Now in Saudi Arabia: The Newest GE Global Research Center
Saudi Arabia was the top innovator among Arab countries in 2015, according to the Global Innovation Index. Its ranking was due, in part, to the Kingdom’s high percentage of university graduates in engineering and science, its developed physical infrastructure and the simple tax environment. Despite the top regional spot, the Kingdom wasn’t as strong in areas such as R&D and knowledge creation.
GE is helping improve these areas, with a just announced decision to build on the early success of the Saudi GE Technology & Innovation Center. Beginning now, GE will designate the center, located in the Dhahran Techno Valley, as the ninth GE Global Research Centers around the world.
With a principal goal of helping meet the Kingdom’s growing demand for power by developing new ways to optimize operations across the energy supply chain, the center is the first of its kind in the region.
The Center will include researchers from GE Global Research, GE Power & Water and GE Oil & Gas, further accelerating the pace of localized innovation and the adoption of Industrial Internet technologies for the Kingdom.
Among its global research initiatives, the center will focus on material characterization, combustion and fuels, analytics, and other technology to support the unique demands of the Middle East region. Several laboratories will be developed in these research areas over the next several years in conjunction with GE Power & Water and GE Oil & Gas.
The center also will continue its ongoing research programs that include a ‘Hot & Harsh’ Global Research & Development Program, a Software & Analytics ‘Industrial Internet’ Lab, and a GE ‘in Saudi for region’ hub for energy-efficiency technology development.
The new designation follows GE’s announcement earlier this year to invest US$100 million to regional research and technology, with an emphasis on a “Power Generation Hot and Harsh Center of Excellence,” energy efficiency, oil and gas research, and the Industrial Internet.
As exemplified by the innovation taking place in Saudi Arabia, GE is leading the region in a new industrial era by connecting machines, data and people across the Industrial Internet, so that they can perform better, faster, safer, and more reliably.
As it has for 80 years, GE is helping customers in the Kingdom address their toughest challenges and thereby support Saudi economic development. Increasingly, these solutions leverage the power of the Industrial Internet.
