More Power from Less Fuel? Sign Me Up!
How do you like the idea of generating more power, while consuming less fuel? Sounds good, right? Well, it’s actually happening … and right here in the region. At Dubai Aluminium’s (DUBAL) huge smelter, GE has upgraded one of its existing gas turbines that helps power the plant. The result was an increase in power output by 3.4%, generating an additional 5.88 MW, and improved fuel efficiency of about 1.5%.
Similar upgrades using GE’s LifeMax Advantage portfolio, which includes the Advanced Gas Path solution used in the DUBAL case, are being made to two additional gas turbines at the plant. As a result, output capacity across all three units is expected to increase by 17.64 MW, fuel use is expected to fall by 1.5%, and the maintenance interval will be extended to 32,000 hours, the equivalent of adding one additional year of operation before the next big scheduled maintenance.
For companies such as DUBAL, this type of upgrade helps them manufacture products as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. Bringing such upgrades to utilities across the Middle East could have a massive multiplying effect on the efficiency of power generating capacity. That’s particularly the case, since by 2040, energy demand is expected to increase by 76% across the region, making it critical for power producers to maximize energy generation efficiencies.
