In Kotri, Pakistan, ‘Jenbacher’ Means Economic Development and Electricity
For people living in Kotri, Hyderabad, Pakistan, the arrival of five new GE Jenbacher gas engines over the next several months — the first of 12 in total — means more than you might think. First, the 35 megawatts (MW) captive power plant will be one of the largest of its kind in the country, providing reliable electricity to run a Fimcotex Industries (Pvt.) Limited textile mill that will boost economic activity in the region.
Second, surplus generation from the plant, sufficient to power approximately 2,500 Pakistani households, will be fed into the grid of the local utility, helping to meet a part of the energy demand and supply gap in the country.
Supporting the textile sector with reliable power is an important contribution to Pakistan’s economy, given the major role the sector plays in the country’s economy. According to the Finance Ministry, the textile sector employs 40% of the industrial sector’s workforce, accounts for nearly 55% of Pakistan’s exports, contributes 8% of Pakistan’s GDP and provides livelihood opportunities for more than 10 million farming families.
The Jenbacher has played a particularly notable role in providing electricity in the textile sector, as well as to the country’s broader power generation capacity. Pakistan has one of the highest concentrations of Jenbacher engines in the world. More than 1,000 units have been sold in Pakistan since the 1990s, recording more than 31 million hours of operation. They generate more than 1,445 MW of power for some of the country’s most important industries, including the textile, chemical and manufacturing sectors, as well as utilities.
The Jenbacher engine offers operators tremendous fuel flexibility, as they are able to run on natural gas, flare gas, biogas, biomass, landfill gas and other gaseous fuel types.
Fimcotex Industries (Pvt.) Limited manufactures and exports high quality cotton yarn, and GE will also provide Fimcotex with a 90,000-operating-hour Material Stream Agreement, which supports Fimcotex’s own maintenance teams with spare parts, favorable prices and price security on parts, preferential dispatching of spare parts, and the latest technology.
