We all know that aircraft engines generate a lot of power. After all, they lift giant aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus 380, which when fully loaded can weigh more than 500,000kg, into the skies and carry them halfway around the world. But caring for these aircraft engines generates something else as well: jobs.

And these aren’t just any jobs. They are highly skilled positions, and up to 500 of them – many designated for UAE Nationals – will be landing in Dubai in the second quarter of 2014. They will be located at a new US$100 million Emirates Engine Maintenance Center for GE90 and GP7200 engines, a facility that is designed to be the most technologically advanced engine maintenance center in Asia.

The center will serve engines for Emirates’ Boeing 777 and Airbus 380 fleet – both the nearly 150 aircraft in service and the 138 more aircraft on order. Located 40km from Dubai, the facility will complement, and be located next to, the state-of-the-art Emirates Engine Test Centre, a 150,000-pound thrust capacity engine test facility, already in operation.

GE will oversee the design and construction of the 225,000-sq.ft. facility, in collaboration with Emirates, and will incorporate advanced technology, equipment and industry best practices in managing the maintenance, overhaul and repair of 300 engines a year.
