Efficient Power for over 1 Million Pakistani Homes

With reliable power supply a top priority in Pakistan as the country heads into summer, GE has supplied efficient gas turbine technology for expansions at two of the country’s major power plants. The Guddu Thermal Power Plant expansion will add 747MW of capacity, while the Uch-II Power Plant will add approximately 400MW, a combined generating capacity sufficient to power more than 1,000,000 homes.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif recently inaugurated a new power plant at the Guddu complex, which features two GE 9FA gas turbines at the heart of a combined-cycle configuration that delivers an efficiency of greater than 58% — one of the most efficient plants in the country. The complex now has a capacity of 2,402 MW.

The Uch-II combined-cycle power plant at Dera Murad Jamali in Baluchistan, an expansion of the Uch-I plant, features two GE 9E gas turbines that are environmentally friendly and conform to World Bank guidelines on nitrous oxide emissions. With extended life on its parts, the maintenance interval on the 9E turbines has nearly doubled to 16,000 hours.

The two plant expansions are part of the government’s commitment to add 21,000 MW of additional power by 2020 to address a forecast that expects peak power demand to more than double between 2010 and 2020.

In 2010, GE signed a memorandum of understanding with the Pakistan government to develop the country’s energy resources to meet projected demand by 2020, building on the company’s more than six decades in the Pakistani power sector.
