Advanced Imaging Assists Cancer Treatment in Tunisia
With cancer, the second most prevalent non-communicable disease in Tunisia and the incidence of cancer mortality on the rise, patients will benefit from the arrival of the country’s first PET/CT cancer detection technology. This GE Healthcare machine combines PET (Positron Emission Tomography) nuclear medicine, which provides information about how the cancer cells are behaving, with the x-ray computed tomography (CT) scan, which gives a highly accurate localization of the tumor.
Delivered to the CERU Nuclear Medicine Center, Tunisia’s largest private clinical radiology, and nuclear medicine center, GE’s PET/CT machine provides oncologists with advanced imaging to help in the monitoring and assessment of therapeutic responses as part of cancer treatment.
In the area of molecular imaging, PET/CT offers the potential to provide valuable treatment information to doctors and their patients during a course of treatment. By using PET/CT early in the process, doctors can assess whether a patient is responding to a particular treatment, and allows doctors to adapt treatment accordingly.
Following Tunisian regulatory authorization in September 2015, the center has successfully scanned more than 100 patients, said Dr. MajdiMahersi, Medical Director at CERU. “We are thankful for the support of the Ministry of Health’s progressive efforts to tackle the growing burden of cancer and look forward to our continued partnership with GE Healthcare, leveraging their global capabilities and innovations to increase access to these technologies for our patients.”
