If you’ve ever questioned the power of a big challenge to spur innovation, just ask the nine recently announced finalist organizations in the Women Powering Work competition.

Proposals include economic support to recently released female prisoners, a virtual engineering company for female engineers, business support to female Bedouin handicraft producers, entrepreneurial support to young female ICT graduates, and flexible employment opportunities tailored for Emirati women.

Finalists from the MENA region come from Egypt, the UAE, Yemen and Jordan, while other finalists come from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

GE has teamed up with Ashoka Changemakers to establish this online competition that will award three prizes, each worth $25,000 in unrestricted funding to innovative solutions. Finalists have demonstrated solutions that can advance economic opportunities for women in the region, strengthen their families and communities, and enable women to benefit equitably from economic growth.

The exciting thinking and creative approaches reflected in these proposals hint at the great energy and enormous impact that women are having in the region. As communities and economies continue to unlock the full potential of the entire population of the region, the dynamism apparent in the Middle East and North Africa will only accelerate.
