Turning Raw Data into More Reliable Electricity for Algeria
Every second, thousands of sensors at 10 Algerian power plants, which generate up to 11 gigawatts (GW) of power, are sending data to a futuristic monitoring center set up by Sonelgaz SPE and GE Power. GE’s digital industrial solutions help turn the raw data into more reliable electricity as the information collected is analyzed to provide insights on key performance indicators such as availability, output and fuel consumption.
Mr. Mohamed Arkab, CEO of Sonelgaz, said, “Sonelgaz’s priority is to boost electricity production through efficient installations to help meet the growth in energy demand. Digitizing the power plants will give us the ability to identify potential operational issues before they occur, thus allowing us to make the necessary corrections to reduce unplanned downtime and enhance the reliability of not just individual assets but our power plants as a whole.”
Sonelgaz SPE will receive real-time data from up to 10,000 physical and virtual sensors across the 10 facilities. GE’s Asset Performance Management (APM) and Operations Optimization (OO) software applications will monitor and analyze the data, leveraging advanced analytics to predict and eliminate unplanned downtime, and improve power plant productivity. The software is built on GE’s industrial application development platform, Predix, and was purpose-built to meet the scale, complexity, speed and security requirements of industry.
“GE’s efforts to help Sonelgaz digitize their power plants underscores the Company’s commitment to support the modernization of Algeria’s power sector. Through these solutions, we want to help our customers enhance the operational performance of their facilities. The ability to anticipate and prevent problems is at the heart of efficient and reliable production and we are proud that GE’s digital industrial solutions will help Sonelgaz meet its energy security goals,” said Russell Stokes, President & CEO of GE Power.
The inauguration of the M&D Center represents a significant milestone in the strategic collaboration between Sonelgaz and GE. It is part of a historic agreement signed in April 2017, which encompasses operations and maintenance (O&M) services, technology upgrades that will enhance energy efficiency, GE’s digital solutions, and much more.
