To the Mall for Shopping, Lunch… and a Mammogram
We all know how convenient shopping malls can be for getting lots of things done in one location. We can buy clothes, groceries, a new mobile phone, or toys for the kids and also enjoy a good meal. Now, you can add one more thing – a potentially lifesaving clinical breast exam and mammogram.
In October and November, the Saudi Ministry of Health is launching two first-of-a-kind Women’s Health Screening Clinics at two Riyadh shopping malls, with more to open in coming months. By setting up these clinics in such convenient locations, the ministry hopes to screen 10,000 women over the next 12 months.
Getting women screened is vital, given that breast cancer is the single most common type of cancer affecting women in Saudi Arabia, according to the ministry. It accounts for nearly one in every five new cancer diagnoses. What’s more, Saudi women generally are diagnosed with breast cancer at a later stage, resulting in increased mortality. Early detection is crucial to achieving the best possible outcome.
Developed in association with GE Healthcare, Asala Holding and the Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Group, the clinics complement the ministry’s National Breast Cancer Screening Program, which has been running with the support of GE Healthcare since 2012. The openings coincided with the launch of a month-long national breast cancer awareness campaign endorsed by the Ministry of Health at a number of malls across the Kingdom.
This unique concept in women’s health offers a general diagnostic check of height, weight and blood pressure; clinical breast examination and mammogram; and health education – with an emphasis on promoting a healthier lifestyle.
GE Healthcare has provided its latest diagnostic equipment, which creates a soothing environment to distract patients from the perceived discomfort, pain and anxiety of a mammogram by offering a variety of ambient lighting with images and videos taken from nature.
His Excellency HE Dr. Mansour Al-Hawasi, Vice Minister of Health, opened the first clinic at Hayat Mall last week. The Panorama Mall clinic is set to open later this week.
