This Sugar Mill Sweetens Your Tea and Lights Your Home
Fed by rivers such as the Jhelum and Chenab, the agricultural region of Jhang District in Punjab Province is home to numerous Pakistani textile and sugar mills that process the raw cotton and sugar cane grown in the area. In a first-of-its-kind project in the country, one of those mills not only produces sugar from the region’s agricultural bounty, but electricity as well.
The electricity is fed into the national grid — thereby providing valuable electricity to help shrink the country’s electricity supply gap – and also helps meet the mill’s onsite power supply, heating and chilling requirements.
Not only does this provide additional revenues to the mill, but it also reduces the need for fossil fuel at the plant, thereby reducing the facility’s greenhouse gas emissions and overall environmental footprint. Furthermore, by reducing Pakistan’s demand for fossil fuels, the biogas-fueled engines reduce pressure on the country’s foreign reserves.
The many benefits of the Jenbacher engine project underscore the shared Shakarganj-GE commitment to solutions that will sustainably strengthen Pakistan’s economy.
With more than 1,000 units in operation across the country, Pakistan has one of the highest concentrations of Jenbacher gas engines in the world. The units have been sold in the country since the 1990s, recording more than 31 million hours of operation. They generate more than 1,445 MW of power for some of Pakistan’s most important industries, including the textile, chemical and manufacturing sectors, as well as utilities. Offering operators tremendous fuel flexibility, the engines are able to run on natural gas, flare gas, biogas, biomass, landfill gas and other gaseous fuel types.
They are among more than 110 ecomagination-certified products and services that help countries address critical national needs such as generating greener and more efficient sources of energy, reducing pressure on foreign exchange reserves and improving access to clean water.
In Pakistan, GE’s ecomagination portfolio helps our partners operating in fields as diverse as energy, healthcare and aviation to improve their financial performance, while reducing their environmental footprint.
