The Pulse: Providing a Better View of Heart Disease in the UAE

January 22, 2015 at 12:01pm

In the United Arab Emirates, (UAE) heart attacks and other forms of heart disease are responsible for 30% of all mortalities, making it the leading cause of death. It causes almost as many deaths as all other non-communicable illnesses – including cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease – combined.

What’s more, heart disease fatalities are rising quickly, where the total number of cardiovascular disease deaths nearly doubled between 2002 and 2012. The UAE Ministry of Health’s efforts to bolster the resources in UAE hospital radiology departments with the newest CT, MRI and x-ray equipment will help doctors better address this trend.

In support of the Ministry’s strategy, GE Healthcare was selected to install its ultra-fast Revolution EVO CT computed tomography scanners across nine Ministry hospitals in the UAE. This is the first installation of this state-of-the-art technology outside the United States. The new scanner allows Ministry hospital clinicians to perform more exams in less time, while producing high quality images and delivering lower doses to patients.

“By assuring excellent service standards with the deployment of the latest technologies, we are bringing transformational change to our healthcare system,” said His Excellency Dr. Mohammad Salim Al Olama, Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Health.

The new advanced equipment is part of the Ministry’s strategy to further strengthen standards of health-care delivery in the country, in part through hospital modernization.

“The delivery of the Revolution EVO CT, which represents our newest suite of cardiac-care diagnostic equipment, highlights our commitment to support the UAE Ministry’s objectives of setting international standards and delivering distinguished healthcare services,” says Maher Abouzeid, President & CEO of GE Healthcare for the Middle East and Turkey.

In addition to the nine Revolution EVO CTs, GE Heathcare has installed two Discovery HD 750 CTs and provided advanced training on both devices to hospital radiologists.

The nine Revolution EVO CTs are located in hospitals in Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Ajman, while the two Discovery HD 750 CTs are installed in hospitals in Fujairah and Sharjah.

Health care is evolving in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey (MENAT) as the medical needs change, requiring the latest technologies and quality of care. GE is helping realize this evolution, examples of which are profiled in “The Pulse” posts on Hewar.
