Providing Pakistan with 600MW of Additional Power
It’s safe to say that any country would welcome the chance to generate an additional 600 megawatts (MW) of electricity without building a single new power plant or using any additional fuel. But for a country like Pakistan, which expects peak power demand to more than double between 2010 and 2020, this would be a particular boon.
Technology to achieve such a result is at the heart of a recently signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between GE and the Sapphire Electric Company. The two companies will jointly implement big data, GE’s Predictivity™ solutions that, in conjunction with site-specific operational experience, will help Sapphire run the plant more efficiently, achieving lower operating costs and increased plant output.
These solutions will be integrated into the plant in several phases to enable the automation of processes and data-driven insights that will drive improved performance at the 225 MW Muridke Power Station. The combined-cycle power plant is powered by two GE 6FA gas turbines.
If the concepts being developed at Muridke Power Station were adopted on a broader scale, Pakistan could realize up to 600 MW of additional power from the country’s existing power generation infrastructure. The government has made improving the efficiency, performance and output of the country’s existing infrastructure a priority area as it seeks to address rapid power demand growth.
This software solution is part of the GE Predictivity suite, which leverages connectivity, advanced analytics, and an innovative user experience to maximize the efficiency, sustainability and safety of large industrial assets, while also empowering managers to make well-informed operational decisions.
GE, which signed an MoU in 2010 to help develop Pakistan’s power resources, has supported Pakistan’s energy needs since the country’s independence in 1947. GE has the largest installed base of gas turbines and engines in the country totaling more than 3,000 MW.
