Outlook Algeria: Exploring A Nation of Opportunities

Outlook Algeria: Exploring A Nation of Opportunities

September 17, 2013 at 11:09am

Last week, Algeria announced that new natural gas discoveries, including some that had been identified as recently as this month, are “promising” and would result in an increase in estimated reserves. How the country should respond to such news – particularly if they add considerably to existing reserves – is no simple matter.

That’s because natural resource wealth is a complex blessing that, ideally, is managed with great sophistication. It’s likely that these discoveries, and how it will impact the country’s economic development and diversification goals, will be a focus of conversation at Algeria’s Economic Outlook conference organized by The Economist and GE on September 23 in Algiers.

The one-day event features panel sessions on energy (including renewables), healthcare, growth and development, as well as a briefing on the state of the country’s economy by Jean-Louis Martin, Head of Emerging Countries in the Economic Research Department at Crédit Agricole.

Other speakers include executives from GE, Enel, Total, Repsol, Abengoa Solar, the Université d’Alger.

GE is hosting the event and will bring its expertise, both its field experience working for decades on the ground in Algeria, and its research and development expertise across the region and world.
