Importance of Smart Grid technology
GE has long been a proponent of the importance and awareness of smart grid technology. Smart Grid builds on many of the technologies already in use by electric utilities but adds communication and control capabilities that optimize the operation of the entire electrical grid. Simply, the Smart Grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using two-way digital technology to control appliances at consumers’ homes to save energy, reduce cost and increase reliability and transparency. It is therefore in essence an “energy internet,” delivering real-time energy information and knowledge thereby empowering smarter energy choices.
GE’s Smart Grid technology focus is an endorsement of the company’s commitment to help reduce the carbon footprint while increasing the energy capacity and reliability that countries need to prosper. To do the same under the company’s ecomagination vision, GE has innovative Smart Grid solutions that aid in reducing waste, integrating renewable energy into systems, efficient management of energy, minimizing the impact of outages, and even helping electric cars flourish!
In the region, GE’s initiative with Masdar in Abu Dhabi to construct the first ever ecomagination centre will showcase the company’s wind, solar and other renewable energy products that will power the next generation Smart Grid.
The ecomagination centre is expected to be up to 4,000 square metres in size and will be located near the Masdar Institute – a graduate-level institution dedicated to academic research and study in the development and deployment of the future of energy.
