The staggering breadth of change that the Industrial Internet of Things is having on virtually every aspect of business was on full display during a recent visit to the UAE by the global head of GE Digital.

His presentations ranged from a Government Leadership Session that was part of the UAE Government Leaders Programme to a presentation to the Tharawat Family Business Forum, an independent membership association dedicated to the sustainability, innovation, and growth of family businesses in the Middle East and North Africa.

During the government session, Bill Ruh, Chief Digital Office for GE and CEO of GE Digital, challenged attendees to consider whether they have the vision and skills necessary to lead their organizations in a digital world.

He discussed how organizations can leverage digital industrial solutions to transform the way business and government can operate, particularly in the industrial sector. He pointed out industries that show particular opportunity for a digital transformation, including renewables, additive manufacturing, healthcare and aviation.

The discussion with Tharawat was part of GE’s Digital Transformation Day, jointly organized by the Tharawat Family Business Forum, GE Digital, and Obeikan Digital Solutions. The event introduced the concept of digitization to family-owned enterprises and discussed opportunities presented by digital technologies and advanced data analytics across a variety of industries. Family businesses have had a key role to play in the first three industrial revolutions – electric, steam, and internet. It is only fitting that they also lead during the fourth industrial revolution – the industrial internet.

Ruh shared GE’s own digital transformation journey, providing a concrete example of how it a highly diversified and global company with a workforce of nearly 300,000 transformed itself through the power of digital. This helped to reinforce to participants that whatever sector they operate in, digital industrial solutions can drive efficiencies and productivity.

“Our digital industrial strategy is straightforward,” Ruh told the Tharawat community. “First, we tested and transformed ourselves to strengthen internal productivity. Then, we made our technologies available to our customers.  Finally, we make our Industrial Internet of Things application platform, Predix, available for co-creation. This includes an open-innovation approach that is available to any company in any industrial category.”
