GE Volunteers: Soft and Cuddly Comfort for Tunisian Orphans

Nearly four dozen children from the SOS Gammarth Orphanage in Tunisia enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon making their own stuffed animals side by side with a group of GE Volunteers.

Soft and cuddly characterized this first-ever GE Volunteers event in Tunisia, where the stuffed animals were at the heart of this “Comfort for Kids” activity. Approximately 25 GE Tunisia employees participated, volunteering their time to put warm smiles on the children’s faces. The volunteers comprised nearly 40% of the entire GE Tunisia staff, reflecting the team’s commitment to supporting their community.

During the two-hour visit to the orphanage, located in a suburb of the capital city Tunis, the GE Volunteers, along with the children, “stuffed” nearly 50 stuffed animals and then dress them in t-shirts carrying the GE Volunteers logo. The volunteers also were given an overview of the orphanage’s work, which includes providing a safe and caring home to 80 children and operating a kindergarten.

GE Volunteers are active across the region. Recent activities include a blood donation drive, a clothes collection campaign, and support to a women’s weaving shop and to an urban rooftop garden project in Egypt. In Saudi Arabia, 12 GE Volunteers led a “My Way to the Job Market” workshop for high school students, and GE Volunteers in the UAE cycled 330 kilometers to raise fund for a special needs school.

GE Volunteers is a global initiative of GE that works with local organizations to address societal needs by inviting GE employees to contribute in ways that helps build stronger communities. Globally, GE’s employees volunteer more than 1.3 million hours of community service every year.
