GE Volunteers: My School My Farm
Working towards instilling awareness and education on homestead farming and other agricultural practices among the students, GE Volunteers has partnered with Qatar Green Center, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Environment, to support a greener environment through the new project, ’My School, My Farm’.
GE Volunteers in Qatar has collaborated with 12 schools in the country, working with students from primary to secondary levels for the project that aims to help promote the concept of self-reliance and respect for environment.
Activities of ’My School, My Farm’ include training visits to the Al Otouria Agriculture Research Station ensuring that the students are provided with guidance on agricultural skills including soil types and how to use fertilizers. The students and volunteers are also being trained by specialized Qatar Green Center agricultural engineers on how to take care of the crops as well as their harvesting. The GE volunteer team visited the schools periodically during the four months of the project which will conclude soon with an awards ceremony, where the participating students will be recognized.
The ’My School, My Farm’ initiative was showcased at the 3rd Qatar International Agricultural Exhibition last month, where some of the harvested crops were displayed and the participants highlighted the role of the students who worked on the project.
