GE Volunteers Help Prepare 320 Saudi Teens for the Workplace
Remember being in high school? The world of work – at least the kind you do in an office or manufacturing plant – was an unfamiliar and mysterious place. Wouldn’t it have been great if real-live working professionals had come into your school and given you workshops on subjects like time management, verbal and written communication, and interview techniques?
More than 320 Saudi students recently received just this type of training from 12 GE Volunteers who participated in the “My Way to the Job Market” campaign. This initiative was organized by Injaz Saudi Arabia – the local affiliate of Junior Achievement – under the patronage of the Saudi Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labor.
The GE Volunteers also led sessions on subjects such as problem solving, working in teams, developing a career path and leadership development. In all, the volunteers contributed 145 hours to the program over three days.
The ‘My Way to the Job Market’ initiative reached more than 11,400 high school students across the Kingdom, with each group of students receiving 12 different workshops in business and workplace skills. On completion of the program, the students received a certificate that highlights their career readiness. The GE Volunteers were among more than 380 volunteers from a variety of companies that supported the initiative.
Across the region, GE Volunteers participate in activities to support local communities, including a recently concluded five-day cycling challenge that raised $88,000 in contributions, including a matching gift from GE, and two activities in Cairo, including a blood drive and a “Food and Education” themed initiative in partnership with a non-governmental organization.
GE Volunteers is a global initiative of GE that works with local organizations to address societal needs by inviting GE employees to contribute in ways that helps build stronger communities. Globally, GE’s employees volunteer more than 1.3 million hours of community service every year.
GE has supported Saudi Arabia’s economic development since 1942, when it supplied the Kingdom with turbomachinery for its first oil expedition. For more on GE in Saudi Arabia, click here.
