We might be in the middle of the Cricket World Cup quarterfinals, but for teenage boys in Pakistan, cricket is a year-round passion. That’s why GE Volunteers stepped up to support the SOS Children’s Village in Lahore by providing kits comprising of uniforms, sports shoes, bats and balls for their young team of cricket enthusiasts.

When delivering the kits, the Volunteers also stopped for a short friendly cricket practice session with the staff and children.

The equipment helped thirteen 12-15 year old boys at the Village to participate in the Annual All-Pakistan SOS Cricket Tournament. What’s more, the Lahore team was able to take home the championship!

SOS Children’s Village in Lahore was the first SOS Village project in Pakistan when it opened up in 1977. It provides a caring community and nurturing living environment to children in 19 family homes on a 10-acre campus.

This was the most recent charity initiative by the GE Volunteers Pakistan Chapter, which late last year organized a food collection and distribution program to help displaced people living in temporary Army Flood Relief Camps across the province of Punjab. They collected 651,820 Pakistani Rupees, which they used to purchase more than 3,500 kilograms of essential food items, including sugar, flour, oil, salt and other goods.

More than 25 staff and family members then gathered at the GE office in Lahore to help package the items into 388 cartons, which were delivered to flood affected families residing temporarily in the camps. Together, GE employees and family members put in more than 185 hours of community service.

Also last year GE Pakistan supported the local community by donating much-needed furniture to the Deer Da Dogra Government Primary School for Boys in the Sheikhupura District, which is home to a power plant operated and maintained by GE.

GE Volunteers are active globally, as part of a worldwide initiative of GE that works with local organizations to address social needs by inviting GE employees to contribute in ways that help build stronger communities. Globally, GE’s employees volunteer more than 1.3 million hours of community service every year.
