GE Volunteers Brighten the Day of Child Cancer Patients in Egypt

With the shape of a giant felucca sail on one side of the seven-story building and a huge glass-ball atrium at the entrance, Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357 is designed to capture the imagination of children.

Through its architecture and interior design featuring natural light, and bright colors and shapes throughout, as well as the warm and caring staff, this state-of-the-art hospital aims to improve outcomes for its children patients by helping patients and parents be as hopeful and optimistic as possible. The hospital and its branches elsewhere in the country, that are on the way to being opened, provide free inpatient and outpatient cancer treatments to children from across Egypt.

Outside volunteers also contribute to this positive mood, recently exemplified by the 11 GE Volunteers who visited the hospital in February. They cheered lots of children, both inpatient and outpatient by bringing gifts and hosting an entertainment show. The volunteers also toured the facility and attended a presentation on how individuals and organizations can support the facility.

This is the second time in two months that GE Volunteers have come to the 57357 hospital. In January, a group nine Finance Management Program participants and members of the GE Leaders of Tomorrow Community Outreach group visited the hospital and donated EGP 16,000 to the hospital.

These visits are just the most recent for GE employees in Egypt who support local communities on an ongoing basis. Other recent activities include a food distribution initiative that provided staple food items such as cooking oil, beans, rice and tea during Ramadan to families living in the Manshiet Nasser district, one of Cairo’s neediest neighborhoods; a “Comfort for Kids” activity during which employees put together stuffed animals from kits provided by GE’s international Comfort for Kids program for children at the El Forquan Orphanage in Cairo; and a clothes collection drive done during Ramadan in collaboration with the Resala, Dar Al-Orman and Masr El Kheir charity organizations.

GE Volunteers is a global initiative of GE that works with local organizations to address social needs by inviting GE employees to contribute in ways that help build stronger communities. Globally, GE’s employees volunteer more than 1.3 million hours of community service every year.
