GE Substation Will Help Electricity to Flow between Egypt and Saudi Arabia

Since time immemorial, travelers, haj pilgrims, and goods have moved back and forth between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Soon, thousands of megawatts (MW) of electricity will be flowing between the two countries, half of which will pass through a new GE substation.

The 500/220 kilovolt (kV) Badr Gas-Insulated Substation, a turnkey project by GE Power’s Grid Solutions, came online at the end of September and will play a strategic role in the upcoming Egypt-Saudi Arabia Interconnection Project.

The substation will dispatch up to 1,500 megawatts (MW) of electricity, equivalent to the needs of more than 1 million Egyptian households, and will not only support the Interconnection Project but also the infrastructure needs of increased power generation in the Cairo Governorate in northeast Egypt.

The Badr substation also will help the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to provide reliable power supply, while minimizing losses of transferred power, thereby improving continuous electrical supply to Egyptian households.

In total, the interconnection project will provide up to 3,000 MW of capacity to link the national power grids of the two countries. The link will help Egypt and Saudi Arabia to provide more reliable electricity in a more capital-efficient manner. That’s because the two countries have different peak demand times, allowing for the exchange of spare electricity to meet this demand.

The substation incorporates GE Power’s environmentally friendly T155 550 kV and B105 220 kV Gas-Insulated Switchgear. These technologies contain digital monitoring control and protection capabilities that enable them to be readily integrated into the smart grid.

GE Power is providing ongoing support to the Badr project through training to EETC engineers and the supply of spare parts.
