GE’s sixth Minds + Machines event was held last month in San Francisco, and in an indication of the company’s commitment to digital in the Middle East, North Africa & Turkey, the event featured a special regionally-focused breakout session: “Digital in the Emerging World: The Power of Transformation.”

The discussion focused on the enormous opportunities for digital industrial transformation across the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and Pakistan, and included a panel of customers from the region that was moderated by Ali Saleh, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer for GE Digital Middle East, Africa & Turkey. An opening keynote to the breakout session was made by Khozema Shipchandler, Chief Financial Officer for GE Digital.

The breakout session built on a number of landmark digital transformation agreements featuring GE’s Industrial Internet of Things solutions that were signed in the region over the past year.

These include a partnership with Obeikan Investment Group to establish Obeikan Digital Solutions, which will promote digitization in the food & beverage and consumer packaged goods industry to help enhance productivity and efficiency; with Hewlett Packard Enterprise to bring cybersecurity solutions to the industrial sector in the region; with the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia to support the digitization of the healthcare sector in the Kingdom to improve patient care and system efficiencies; with Çalık Holding to establish a digital practice within the Turkish conglomerate; and with Türk Telekom to jointly approach partners around the region with digital industrial solutions.

In the region, GE has become an integral part of the developer community through hackathons – which bring together talented and innovative developers in software specific competitions – and events in Turkey, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and the UAE that focus on Predix, the only digital platform purpose-built to meet the scale, complexity, speed and security requirements of industry.

Also during the Minds + Machine event, GE introduced a range of digital solutions to help industrial companies increase the productivity and efficiency of their industrial assets and drive better business outcomes.

These include Predix Edge technologies to accelerate computing at the edge (which means on the machine itself); the Predix platform partnering with Microsoft Azure, the cloud for enterprises; new Operations Performance Management software to bridge productivity from assets to operations; enhanced Field Service Management solutions to improve the customer experience; and Predix Studio, new platform tools to simplify industrial app development.

Also at the event, to shed light on the digital transformation challenge globally, GE released the first “Digital Industrial Evolution Index”. The index revealed that 80% of Information Technology (IT) and Operations decision makers in industrial, manufacturing, energy, aviation, and transportation sectors believe that the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) will or could be transformational to their companies and industries, but only 8% say digital transformation is ingrained in their businesses.
