Etihad Airways has made history as the first airline in the Middle East, and the second globally, to select the new GE9X-powered Boeing 777X aircraft, as part of its just-announced order for 56 Boeing wide-body planes.

Etihad’s order includes a commitment for 25 GE9X-powered Boeing 777X, 30 GEnx-1B-powered Boeing 787-10 and one GE90-115B-powered Boeing 777-200LR aircraft. The list price for these engines is more than $3 billion.

The GE9X will be the largest and most fuel-efficient engine GE has ever designed and manufactured. The GEnx and GE90-115B engines are part of GE’s ecomagination portfolio of products developed to help enhance GE customers’ environmental and operating performance.

For Etihad, the leading premium airline brand in the world, this will mean greater fleet efficiency, lower costs and a reduced environmental footprint. The GEnx engine family, which is the fastest-selling engine in GE Aviation history with more than 1,300 engines on order, offers up to 15% better fuel consumption and 15% less CO2, compared to GE’s CF6 engine.

The GEnx engine dramatically reduces NOx gases as much as 55% below today’s regulatory limits and other regulated gases as much as 90%. Based on the ratio of decibels to pounds of thrust, the GEnx is the quietest engine GE produces, with noise levels about 40% lower.
