Energy in the Digital Era Comes to Algeria

The ability of digital technology to empower and transform nearly everything it touches has been well demonstrated, exemplified by the impact of smartphones and apps on our daily lives. As the energy industry in Algeria (and globally) looks for new levers to drive efficiency and productivity, digital can play a powerful role in this field as well.

GE, which is already the world’s leading digital industrial company, has developed Predix, the first cloud-based operating system designed for large-scale industrial equipment and processes. By combining data acquisition and advanced data analysis with big machines and systems, GE’s Industrial Internet solutions are helping customers optimize operations, manage assets better, and anticipate maintenance requirements.

Across the economies of the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and Pakistan, GE estimates adoption of these solutions could generate more than US$465 billion in new economic growth. Having already implemented these software solutions in many of its own factories, GE, estimates that digitizing industrial systems can reduce unplanned downtime by as much as 20%.

During a customer conference in Algiers yesterday entitled, “Energy in the Digital Era,” GE demonstrated the major impact that these solutions can have across Algeria’s energy sector, particularly given today’s complex operating environment.

The event was attended by Joan Polaschik, the US Ambassador in Algeria, representatives of the Ministry of Energy and national oil and gas producer Sonatrach, and state-owned utility Sonelgaz. GE officials demonstrated the company’s software solutions, including the Digital Power Plant, Asset Performance Management and Digital X-Ray in the context of the power and oil and gas sectors.

As was explained at the conference, Asset Performance Management solutions are for all types of heavy equipment and add value by processing equipment data to generate insights that allow operators to take actions to reduce unplanned equipment downtime, improve reliability and availability, and minimize costs and operational risks.

GE’s Brilliant Factory Software Suite uses a “digital thread” to link design, product engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, logistics and servicing into one integrated and intelligent system that helps factories improve output, reduces costs and shortens the cycle time between market demand and production.

Importantly, all of these digital and cloud-based solutions are protected by advanced security solutions through GE’s Wurldtech unit, which provides operational technology expertise that can help test, certify and secure industrial connected devices, applications, and processes.

For more than 40 years, GE has cooperated with government and private sector partners in Algeria to address their most difficult challenges in the fields of aviation, healthcare, oil and gas, power, transportation and water.
