Appreciating a Partner’s Shared Ethos of Innovation
Last week the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) hosted an event celebrating its partners. As I looked around the room, I saw reflected in all of us from the public and private sector there, DEWA’s driving spirit of energy, enthusiasm and can-do embrace of the future.
It’s very much the Dubai and UAE ethos, and it’s also a mindset that we find familiar, aligning, as it does, with GE’s own culture of innovative thinking and reinventing to address evolving energy challenges.
This pioneering spirit can be seen in DEWA’s energy diversification journey. As they implement the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2050, they have expanded from gas-fired power plants into both solar PV and solar thermal technologies, as well as into clean coal.
These steps place DEWA – as well as Dubai and the broader UAE – at the forefront of energy innovation. The 5,000-megawatt (MW) Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will be the largest solar park of its kind in the world, while the 2,400 megawatt (MW) Hassyan Clean Coal Independent Power Project (IPP) is the first in the region to use coal as fuel.
At GE, we are privileged to be a part of DEWA’s journey. We are joining hands on both Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the MBR Solar Park 1 – where our high-efficiency solar inverters are helping reduce costs – and in the Hassyan project, where our ultra-supercritical technology for steam power plants will help the plant become one of the cleanest coal-fired plants in the world.
DEWA also is venturing into the digital space, exploring areas such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to drive operational efficiencies across assets and in 3D printing and manufacturing.
There are areas where GE has a strong presence, regionally and globally, through GE’s IIoT and big data asset performance management solutions built on the cloud-based Predix operating system designed for industry.
We look forward to collaborating in this sphere, where there are lots of opportunities to add value through greater efficiencies that let you do more with less, operate equipment more efficiently and better manage planned and unplanned outages.
With a record of breaking records, DEWA shows it is open to new solutions. Pushing the boundaries of efficiencies in gas turbine power generation could be the next frontier.
And with GE’s HA gas turbine at the heart of the Bouchain combined-cycle gas turbine power plant, which holds the Guinness World RecordsTM title for efficiency in a combined-cycle power plant (62.22%), we are well positioned to support DEWA in perhaps adding another record-breaking technology to its portfolio.
GE was honored to be recognized by DEWA at its partners’ appreciation ceremony and we thank them in return for our long-term relationship and look forward to continuing to bring to this partnership the latest technologies from GE.
