An Educational Excursion for Aspiring Energy Engineers in Algeria

An Educational Excursion for Aspiring Energy Engineers in Algeria

April 28, 2015 at 02:04pm

It’s only about an hour’s drive from the Algerian Petroleum Institute (IAP) campus west of Algiers to the ALGESCO turbo machinery service center located to the south of the capital. But for 50 petroleum engineering students who participated in a recent excursion to the center, it provided a unique glimpse into their future.

That’s because most of IAP’s petroleum engineering students will go to work for Sonatrach, Algerian’s national oil and gas company, after graduation, and ALGESCO — a joint venture between GE, Sonatrach and Algeria’s national electricity and gas company Sonelgaz — is where a wide range of Sonatrach’s turbines, compressors and related equipment are serviced and repaired.

The first-of-its-kind learning excursion, which focused on GE Oil & Gas turbo machinery services, gave the students a fresh perspective on engineering issues in the oil and gas sector. They also got an up-close idea about the equipment they are likely to deploy in their future work and how this equipment is serviced and repaired.

Through open discussions with GE trainers, the petroleum engineering students gained insights about gas turbines, centrifugal compressors and control systems. They also visited the ALGESCO repair workshop, where they received an extensive explanation on all types of repairs and the technologies used to accomplish each task.

ALGESCO technicians repair gas turbines, steam turbines, centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, and expanders. The center also is equipped with the newest coating technology, advanced renewable-energy technologies, a laser repair system and machining technology.

The daylong visits also included a presentation on GE and its long history of more than 40 years in Algeria, as well as the company’s sustained support to developing human capital in Algeria to support economic growth and expansion.
