Step on It: How GE Technology Can Build a Faster Race Car
Formula 1 racing is known for the fastest cars and exotic race destinations. Among these, of course, is Yas Marina Circuit, home to the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
However, being a “premium partner” to the Caterham F1 Team means more to us than adorning Caterham’s dark green race cars with the GE monogram. It means putting GE technology and know-how under the hood as well.
At the F1 level, even the tiniest of tweaks can mean dramatic differences in performance. And sometimes these tweaks are possible by “thinking outside the box” according to Mark Smith, Caterham F1 Team’s technical director.
Team Caterham are excited about tapping GE’s expertise in jet engine aerodynamics, heat management, new materials such as composites, and even non-destructive testing methods like ultrasound. And the timing couldn’t be better. In 2013, new F1 racing regulations will limit the size of the F1 engines and their fuel flow. Access to GE’s software, technology, and researchers can help Caterham F1 Team improve its car design at a lower cost. So will efficiency win the race in 2013? We hope so.
