(English) GE Hewar Week for Women: Inspired by International Women’s Day – part 3
In the week running up to International Women’s Day on March 8, a day when we can all celebrate the many remarkable achievements of women around the world, and in the Middle East in particular, we are profiling the inspirational women who have forged successful careers at GE in the Middle East.
Today, we focus on Rana Nawas, the VP for Marketing at GE’s aviation leasing business.
Rana joined GE Corporate in November 2004, initially to take part in a six-month project on desalination.
Having clearly demonstrated her strong analytical and leadership abilities, she then joined the Experienced Commercial Leadership Program from July 2005 till July 2007, taking over a number of different roles in different businesses.
When she graduated from the program, she took a permanent role in GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) as VP for Marketing. GECAS is a GE business that leases aircraft to airlines throughout the world, and this has proved to be her biggest challenge yet. In a senior sales role, in a male-dominated industry, she has to interact with customers who had rarely dealt with women in such a prominent position.
Her success in this role can be put down to her exceptional interpersonal skills, the ongoing support of her GE colleagues and managers, and the shifting attitudes towards women in the Middle East and Africa – attitudes that are being changed every day by women just like Rana.
Rana says that she is inspired by Angelina Jolie, who she believes has accomplished so much not just in her acting career, but also on a personal and humanitarian level: her ability to juggle everything around her so well is admirable.
Rana’s message to the women of the world who are seeking rewarding, fulfilling lives is simple: “Only you define your limitations – nobody else has that power over you.
